Japan to undertake $500m in Madagascar port upgrade

Japan will undertake $$500m port upgrade in Madagascar, officials said.

The Malagasy Presidency said the deal was struck during President Hery Rajaonarimampianina's three-day official visit to the Asian state.

President Rajaonarimampianina's tour of Japan ended on Wednesday.

The Indian Ocean island state leader held talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.

He also met with Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife Michiko Shoda at the imperial palace of Ky├╝den in Tokyo.

A highway

The Japanese government confirmed its decision to upgrade the Malagasy port of Toamasina by equipping it with modern equipment.

The seven-year project, that will also involve the construction of a highway connecting the seaport to the capital Antananarivo, will begin next year and cost approximately $500 million.

President Rajaonarimampianina also met and held talks with some 30 African diplomats serving in Tokyo at the Akasaka State Guest House.
